New Kennewick basketball coach

Kennewick has named Hanford assistant Bradyn Leyde as its new boys basketball coach, replacing Ron King. His hiring was approved by the Kennewick School Board on Wednesday night.
Leyde, 28, is a U.S. History teacher at Chief Joseph Middle School in Richland and has coached the Falcons JV program for the past six years. A graduate of Washington State, this is his first head coaching position.

College signees

We had a reader, Jim from Kennewick, write in to ask if we had a list of senior student-athletes from the area who have signed to play collegiately next year.

Jim, we don't have a list per se, but here is a preliminary list of athletes I can remember who have signed with four-year colleges.

Please, if anyone has an addition to the list, post it so we can keep track of all these deserving athletes.

What a way to go

Davis' use of an ineligible player in its season-ending baseball doubleheader with Wenatchee affected not just the Pirates.

Walla Walla saw its season come to an abrupt end thanks to the Pirates having to forfeit its victory over Wenatchee in what was a split.

Why? Wa-Hi had finished in a tie for sixth with Wenatchee and was readying for a one-game playoff for the final district berth. But Wenatchee picked up an extra win thanks to the forfeit, moving it instead into a tie for fourth with Eisenhower and Davis -- which dropped out of a three-way tie for second and a shot at a first-round district bye.

Week 2 statewide rankings

Lem Elway’s latest statewide prep baseball rankings are out.
Kiona-Benton tops the 1A ranks, although Lem has the Bears’ record wrong -- they are 10-0, not 10-1.
Two other area teams are ranked in 1A -- Warden is No. 8 and River View is ninth.
Richland is No. 2 in the 4A rankings, while Southridge is No. 7 in 3A after its sweep of Kennewick.

Ryan Moberg passes away

A high school athlete who was critically injured in a pole vaulting accident at Walla Walla has died.

St. Mary Medical Center nursing supervisor Char Brown says 18-year-old Ryan Moberg died today.

The fire department says Moberg sustained head and neck injuries Monday when he landed during an indoor practice at DeSales Catholic High School.

The director of Walla Walla Catholic Schools, David Schmitz, says a coach was present at the practice, which had been scheduled during spring break.

Track and field -- toughest event?

OK, I'm going to shamelessly steal from mis compadres at The Seattle Times and ask the same question Sandy Ringer posed on their preps blog: Which is the toughest event in track and field?

Sandy posits it's the 400 meters, and I will agree it's tough. But for my money, the 800 is the most grueling event in HS track. Yes, the 400 is a dead-out sprint for one lap, but the way the 800 has morphed in recent years, it's pretty much a dead sprint for almost the entire two-lap race.

Live from Tacoma, 3rd-6th place gm, Prosser v. Elma

Fun first quarter for Prosser.
Scored first 8 points of game to get nice cushion, and then Jordan Brown finishes the frame with a buzzer-beating 35-footer to make it 24-8.
